The Child Who Counted Pipes

A child who can count pipes will not get lost the way maps get lost.

Format: Short story

Archive section: undercity

District: Glassmere underlayers

Location: Spine 12–14

Reading time: 4 minutes

Tone: Quiet, inhabited

A fictional narrative within Callizto Dark Symphony.

“Seven, eight, the one that knocks.”

Orrin listened.

“Nine?”

“Nine is rude. Sleeping.”

Pell-below gave the child a dry rag to fold, which is how you employ someone who is seven.

Municipal Water would have wanted a diagram.

The child had a better one: names that were behaviors.

When the current shrugged, she did not cry.

She counted until the polite pipe spoke.

Then she handed back the rag, which was rent.
