Steam Under the Restaurant
Meridian’s restaurants vent down as well as up. Someone has to live in the smell of other people’s cumin.
A fictional narrative within Callizto Dark Symphony.
The vent brought Pair//Local’s evening down like a weather front.
Rook had stopped calling it theft. Smell was not a portion.
“They’re cooking the good onions,” said Tam-below, who had once worked a Foundry canteen and now stirred a pot that had to feed a corridor.
“They’re cooking. We’re cooking. The air is a bigamist.”
A knock from above: two, then a pause. The upstairs neighbour’s code for window closed, don’t file. Rook knocked back soup on, don’t drain.
The belly was not a restaurant. It had a crate, a ladle, and a rule about not asking who was Unnamed tonight.
A waiter from above came down the service stair by mistake, fancy shoes learning mud.
“This isn’t the cellar.”
“It is a cellar. Just not yours.”
He stared at the pot.
“That’s our cumin.”
“That’s physics.”
He almost reached for a ticket. Then he smelled his own shift on him and had the grace to look sick.
Rook handed him a bowl because manners are cheaper than a war with a restaurant.
The waiter sat on the crate that was not a chair.
“I thought you were a story they tell to keep rents interesting.”
“We’re a Tuesday.”
He ate. He left the bowl. He left a stack of napkins that said Pair//Local, which Tam-below would use as filters.
After he was gone, Rook said, “He’ll tell it as a secret.”
“Let him. Secrets keep upstairs from sending inspectors. Inspectors send maps. Maps send trouble.”
The vent breathed cumin again.
Rook opened their own pot and the two smells married without a license.
Meridian, above, laughed.
Meridian, below, ate.
No one filed the form about shared air.
Ashfall would have voted. Here they just seasoned.
