The Gauge That Lied Kindly
A gauge can be wrong and still keep people from panicking. The walk is to know which kind of wrong.
A fictional narrative within Callizto Dark Symphony.
Kesh tapped the glass.
The needle sat where it liked to sit: a little high, as if the pipe had manners.
“It’s lying,” said Nim, who carried the can because carrying was a language.
“It’s lying kindly,” Kesh said. “Feel the pipe.”
Nim felt. Warmth in the right place. Pressure in the wrist-sense you get after years of not trusting numbers.
They walked Node 7 the way you walk a sleeping animal: without drama.
A door opened. Someone’s washing hung where washing was not supposed to hang and would hang anyway. A child counted pipes under her breath: seven, eight, the one that knocks.
“Morning,” Kesh said.
“It isn’t,” the child said.
“That’s why we knock.”
They knocked the valve sequence that meant water is coming, not soldiers. The corridor answered with a cough of air and then a decent flow at the tap.
An old man filled two bottles and a pot. He did not say thanks. He left a heel of bread on the valve housing, which was thanks.
Nim ate it. Kesh pretended not to see. That was also thanks.
At the capped junction someone had painted over the old municipal stencil. The paint was honest: this was not a map for upstairs.
“Surface thinks this litre is unaccounted,” Nim said.
“Surface can account for fountains.”
They found the kind unkind lie at spine 12: a gauge showing plenty while the pipe was a whisper. Kesh marked it with chalk. Not a ticket. A memory.
A woman asked if the hours had moved.
“Hours moved. Water didn’t. Come at the knock.”
She nodded. She had a face that had learned not to ask who owned the knock.
They did not say Liariel. They did not say Kael. The pipe did not require famous names to be a pipe.
Back at Node 7 the kindly gauge still smiled.
Kesh left it. Panic was a worse leak than a needle with optimism.
Nim wrote on the stall board: KNOCK FIRST. GAUGE SECOND.
Soup somewhere started. Cells somewhere charged. The undercity did a Tuesday.
Kesh sat on the crate that was a chair and listened to water arrive anyway.
That was the whole plot.
It was enough.
