The Surface Man’s Question
Rusk asks for a wholesale price on people. He thinks he is being efficient. Merr almost laughs. Then he sees the empty room.
A fictional narrative within Callizto Dark Symphony.
“I don’t need retail,” Rusk said. “If Vorn is already moving this, I can take volume. Beds, knocks, the ones who don’t show on Civic Network. I have buyers who want quiet labour.”
Merr looked at him.
“You think Kael sells that.”
“I think everything has a price if the corridor is his.”
Merr went with him to the room because disbelief required a floor.
The room had one blanket.
Rusk smiled, professionally. “See. Stock moving.”
Merr did not break his foot. He walked out, late for the first time in his working life, and took the three hours to Kael as a number that would not close.
