Three Copies of a Message
Rell copies a slip three times because the first two look like ordinary freight. The third copy is where the word passage appears, and she almost delivers it anyway.
A fictional narrative within Callizto Dark Symphony.
The first copy said: pallet late, not missing.
The second said the same, in worse handwriting.
The third had a line Rell had thought was a smudge: passage alcove 4 — hour after shrug.
She stood in the corridor with the strap and the cracked-bowl hunger.
Yew had said not to involve the girl. The girl was already involved. That was what straps were.
Rell did not take the third copy to the alcove. She took it to Yew, who swore, who almost lied again, who put it under the pot like a bad spice.
“You were late,” Yew said.
“Like a pallet,” Rell said. “Not missing.”
