The Mark on the Sleeve
Pell’s crew finds a stitch on a new man’s coat that wants to be Nim’s repair. Pell does not raise her voice. She sends the coat upstairs.
A fictional narrative within Callizto Dark Symphony.
Pell ran a thumb over the stitch.
“That’s not ours.”
The new man smiled. “It’s passage.”
“It’s a copy of a repair I have seen on a person who does not work for me.” Pell looked at Dorr’s leftover hire as if he were a jammed door. “Take it off. If you cannot take it off, take yourself off the Cut.”
He took the coat off. The stitch looked even stupider in the hand.
Pell sent it to Kael with a note: Not my crew’s. Not my quiet. Do not send me a list of whose it is.
She went back to carts.
The Cut moved. That was the older agreement, still holding, still not for sale as a myth.
