Veil Passage, Purchased

A man tells Merr he does not need more time because he has bought Veil passage. Merr writes it down twice: once as a joke, once as a problem.

Format: Short story

Archive section: undercity

District: Lower Foundry underlevels

Location: A debtor’s excuse, recorded in the quieter ledger

Reading time: 5 minutes

Tone: Dry, ugly hope

A fictional narrative within Callizto Dark Symphony.

“I bought veil passage,” the debtor said. “So the unmarked won’t be a problem on the east spine. I can finish the run. I’ll pay you from the run.”

Merr’s pen stopped.

“From whom.”

“Dess. Small book. She said it’s a tier. Like Kael’s, but quieter.”

Merr wrote: veil passage — not our SKU.

Then he wrote it again on a scrap, because the first time looked like humour and the second time did not.

He took both to the counting house.

Kael read them without asking Merr to perform alarm.

“Find the inflows,” Kael said.

Merr already had, mostly. That was why he still had a job.
