First Light Is a Lie

There is no sunrise in the spine. People wake because a pipe knocks, a child coughs, or the generator card says rice is soon. Ane decides that this counts as morning.

A fictional narrative within Callizto Dark Symphony.

Ane woke to the absence of the generator.

That was morning: Pell had not started rice yet, which meant it was earlier than 21:00, which meant nothing, because she needed to be at a mending stall when the first water-knock went.

She put her feet on the crate that was the floor’s kindest part. 12 was a room with a door that closed, which was wealth. Ors in 13 was already Switzerland behind his pencil. The child in 12 — not hers, a night arrangement — was still a small shape.

Ane heated water that had been yesterday’s. Coffee was a word. What she had was burnt grain and stubbornness.

The wall ticked. Not Kesh’s line. The official current dreaming.

“Is it day?” the child asked, without opening their eyes.

“It’s the part where we stand up.”

“That’s a lie.”

“First light is a lie down here. Standing up is the honest bit.”

They stood up.

In the corridor someone was already carrying cans. Someone was already arguing with a door that screamed. Ane handed the child a piece of bread that had been more bread yesterday.

“If the grate sounds hollow, you go around. If a number has moved, you ignore it. If Yew has soup, you say you’re with Kesh even if you’re not, and then you feel bad, and then you eat.”

“That’s a lot of rules.”

“That’s a morning.”

They went toward the knock that meant water.

Behind them, 12 stayed dark for another minute, like a person putting off a shift.
