Grate Rules
A child teaches another child which grate is a story. The lesson takes one minute and is worth a childhood.
A fictional narrative within Callizto Dark Symphony.
“Not that one.”
“It looks the same.”
“That’s the trick. The same is how it gets you.”
The older child, from Vesh’s wall, did not say fall. They said get you, which was accurate enough.
They spat on the honest grate. The spit sat. They did not spit on the other. Superstition and physics were both in the curriculum.
“How do you know?”
“Someone didn’t. Then we painted a dot. The painter came and the dot moved with the numbers. So now we know by the sound.”
They tapped. Honest grate: tight. Lying grate: a longer hollow, like a held breath.
The younger child tapped until they could hear it without performing bravery.
“Again tomorrow.”
“Again every time. The corridor doesn’t graduate you.”
They went toward soup.
Behind them the lying grate stayed quiet, which was all you could ask of a hole.
