The Channel

Three missing actuator shipments and one man asking the wrong questions. The information does not go to the Civic Network. It goes downward, then sideways, then stops being local.

Location: A freight-adjacent repair bay and an informal listening post

Reading time: 8 minutes

Tone: Procedural quiet, working life, controlled tension

A fictional narrative within Callizto Dark Symphony.

Tov had worked the same bay for nine years. He repaired what the official yards called “non-priority legacy hardware” and what everyone else called the stuff that still had to move freight.

The first missing shipment was easy to ignore. Actuator batches went missing. The second was less easy. The third shared the same partial serial block and the same quiet buyer who never left a Civic Network trail.

On the fourth day a man in a too-clean coat asked Tov whether certain older crane-interface boards could be sourced without the usual insurance stamps.

Tov said he did not know.

The man left a number anyway.

That night Tov did not call the number. He walked two nodes deeper into the underlevels, past the water reclamation pipes, to a small shutter that only opened if you knew which sequence of knocks still worked.

A woman inside took the description without writing anything down.

“How many shipments?”

“Three confirmed. Possibly a fourth in transit.”

“Buyer description.”

Tov gave it.

“Any mention of Forge Mutual coverage or Sisters-related hardware?”

“No. Just the boards and the actuators.”

She nodded once.

“Leave.”

He left.

Four days later the clean-coated man did not return. The fourth shipment arrived intact at an official dock and was logged as delayed rather than missing. Two harbor security teams conducted a quiet, boring inspection of a warehouse that had nothing interesting inside it by the time they arrived.

Tov heard none of this through official channels.

He heard it the way undercity information usually moved: a mechanic two bays over mentioned that certain serials had become “expensive to ask about,” and a loader said the Queen’s people had walked a corridor that did not appear on the public maps.

On the ninth day a different messenger found Tov at the end of his shift.

“She says the channel worked. The upper side has the shape of it now.”

“The Sisters?”

The messenger did not confirm or deny. In the Undercity that was confirmation enough.

“Any further questions from the clean coat, you did not see him. Any further missing batches with those partials, you use the same knock.”

Tov nodded.

The messenger was already walking away.

Tov went back to the bay, opened a wrist housing that had nothing to do with the missing actuators, and worked until the shift light changed. The city above continued not to know his name. That was the arrangement. He repaired what needed repairing. When something larger than a repair appeared, he told the people who already knew how to pass it upward without turning it into a report that could be searched.

The channel remained open.

He preferred it that way.
