Sugars Beside It
The child who orders sugars beside the cup has a system. The café honors systems that are not policies.
A fictional narrative within Callizto Dark Symphony.
The girl put coins down.
“Two sugars. Not in it. Beside it.”
Jana did it.
Coda, at the window table, watched the girl leave toward Glassmere Central with the cup like a mission.
“Someone upstairs can’t take sweetness unless they choose it,” Coda said.
“That’s most of the city.”
Malik cleaned the steamer.
The board in the window went +7.
Jana did not offer an extra cup yet. It was morning. Extra cups were for people who had already been decent once.
The girl came back with the empty cup and the sugars still beside it, unused.
“She said later.”
Jana nodded.
Later was a kind of order.
