The Plant That Paid Rent

A landing plant is not an amenity. It is a neighbour who does not speak at meetings.

Format: Short story

Archive section: forge-city

District: Spireward

Location: Fourth landing of a respectable stair

Reading time: 4 minutes

Tone: Dry, domestic, class

A fictional narrative within Callizto Dark Symphony.

The plant had outlived a concierge.

Spireward called it greenery. The people who watered it called it Tuesday.

A resident tried to insure it under view amenity. Forge Mutual asked for a chassis number. The resident went quiet.

Rell Okada, coming down from a roof, poured the last of her bottle into the saucer.

“Don’t tell management I do interiors.”

The plant did not tell.

On the railing someone had tied a string with a tag: NOT A CLUB. WATER ANYWAY.

Ashfall would have recognized the theology.

Spireward pretended it was design.
