The Capped Junction

The plan says the junction is capped. Pell puts his hand on the cap and feels the old Foundry still talking.

Format: Short story

Archive section: forge-city

District: The Foundry

Location: A service tunnel listed as discontinued

Reading time: 5 minutes

Tone: Quiet fieldwork

A fictional narrative within Callizto Dark Symphony.

The door on the plan was a wall.

The wall on the plan was a door.

Pell did not report this to Heritage. They would have wanted a photograph.

Sera held the lamp. The tunnel smelled of wet rust and a kind of dust that had once been work.

“There,” he said.

The cap was official. A stamped disc. A date from a year when someone had decided the Foundry no longer needed this particular throat.

Pell put his palm on it.

Sera watched his face.

“It’s live.”

“The stamp says discontinued.”

“The water didn’t read the stamp.”

She wanted a meter. She had brought a meter. The meter, held to the housing, found a flow the way a doctor finds a pulse they are not licensed to mention.

“If I log this—”

“Then someone helpful will come with a better cap.”

Sera put the meter away.

They stood in the discontinued dark, listening to a city that had two thirsts and one set of forms.

On the way out Pell picked a dead leaf off his sleeve. There were no trees in the tunnel.

“From the fountain plant,” he said. “It travels.”

Sera decided that was the only success she would write.
