The Wrong Lunch
Ivo and a stranger open identical lunchboxes. Inside Ivo’s: bread. Inside the stranger’s: a note from a child. They eat the wrong meals and become briefly responsible for each other’s home.
A fictional narrative within Callizto Dark Symphony.
“That’s mine.”
“That’s mine.”
They looked at the boxes. Dented. Same stamp from the same cheap stall.
Ivo had bread and a tomato that had seen things.
The other man, press hall two, had rice and a drawing of a crane with teeth.
“That’s from my kid,” the man said, already standing.
“Eat the rice,” Ivo said. “I’ll guard the crane.”
They sat. They ate the wrong lunches like a treaty.
“I’m Bex.”
“Ivo.”
“You on the press that stopped?”
“Yes.”
Bex nodded, a Foundry nod: I heard, I will not make you perform it.
Ivo put the drawing back as if it were a tool.
At the end Bex offered the tomato.
“It’s had a career,” Ivo said.
“So have we.”
They swapped boxes back.
On the next Thursday the lunchboxes had small marks on the lids. Ivo’s was a scratch. Bex’s was a dot.
The Foundry called this a system.
