The Receipt on Table Five

A receipt left on Black Kettle’s table five is not a message from a secret organization or a code to the city’s hidden history. It is simply a note between two people who happened to share a table during the morning rush.

Format: Small scene

Archive section: forge-city

District: Glassmere

Location: Black Kettle Café

Reading time: 2 minutes

Tone: Warmth, everyday life

An in-world document. Its claims retain their fictional perspective and may be incomplete or contradictory.

Black Kettle was crowded enough that strangers shared tables.

Coda Vale sat opposite an elderly man who was reading transport notices from Glassmere Central and muttering every time a new delay appeared.

“You don’t have to read all of them,” she said.

“Yes, I do.”

“Why?”

“I’m not going anywhere.”

Coda looked at him.

“Then you’re unusually invested.”

“I used to be a transport planner.”

“Ah.”

That apparently explained everything.

When he left, he forgot his glasses.

Coda noticed only after the door had closed.

She handed them to the counter along with the receipt.

On the back she wrote:

He’ll come back. He’s too angry at public transport to buy new ones.

The man returned eleven minutes later.

He read the note.

“Rude,” he said.

Then folded it and put it in his pocket.
