Standing Is Not a Metric
A belonging survey wants a number. An usher gives it weather, then four, then chalk. The aisle refuses to become a product.
A fictional narrative within Callizto Dark Symphony.
The survey had three boxes.
Belonging.
Satisfaction.
Would recommend this civic experience to a colleague.
Ivo stood under the cheap door and typed RAIN for the third night.
Invalid.
Saff, who had standing-room knees, said, “Give them a number. They’ll sleep.”
“If I give them a number they’ll sell the aisle.”
Pell the drummer, passing with a bag of dough from the stall that had outlived zoning, said, “Give them four. It’s honest. It’s also counting.”
Ivo typed 4.
The survey accepted 4 the way Exchange accepted a stamp.
He felt sick.
In the morning Lattice management had a dashboard: belonging up. A proposal to number the west aisle appeared in a thread Ivo was not meant to see and saw anyway because ushers have keys to more than doors.
He went to Saff’s usual patch of floor before the house opened.
“I betrayed the weather.”
“Then un-betray it.”
They stood in the aisle and, with a piece of house chalk reserved for emergency seating, wrote on the inside of the cheap door, low:
STANDING IS NOT A METRIC.
Management would wash it.
They would write it again.
Nadi from Old Circuit arrived too early with a notebook.
“Is this history?”
“This is an aisle,” Ivo said. “If your teacher asks, the complication is rain.”
She wrote RAIN, then 4, then crossed out 4.
The house opened.
People paid different amounts to share air.
Saff stood.
The drummer counted.
Ivo kept the west door a door.
At interval the bar still thought it was Spireward.
Ivo did not drink.
He sent one more survey from the staff terminal:
BELONGING: AISLE.
Invalid.
He smiled, which was rare enough to count as house lights.
After close he oiled the cheap hinge the way Oren’s caretaker oiled the discontinued one: boredom as policy.
Lattice emptied into street.
The numbered proposal, in the morning, would meet a washed door and a chalk ghost.
Civic Network would not rank the ghost.
The cheap door would.
That was the whole culture.
It was enough to keep a city from becoming a club.
