What the Dashboard Cannot Hold

Handle time is red. Benches are full. A supervisor and a clerk argue about whether a city is a metric or a hall.

A fictional narrative within Callizto Dark Symphony.

The supervisor closed the glass, which in Exchange meant the conversation would still be heard and would have to pretend it wasn’t.

“You’re a trend, Len.”

“I’m a window.”

“Overflow seats, Mutual redirects, stall licenses sent to a paper room—none of that is the product.”

“The product is people leaving without being eaten.”

The dashboard behind him showed handle time as a wound. Interim, visible through the glass at window 9, leaned toward fluorescent like a witness.

He tried a kinder voice. “I don’t want you in Spireward. They’d make you sell air.”

“Then leave me the benches.”

“I can leave you a warning.”

She took it. Warnings were paper. She understood paper.

Back at the window she seated a shaking woman, stamped a continuity yes, refused a view tragedy, and sent a night mechanic’s client toward a Foundry hook instead of a premium.

The fountain man waved his NOTED like a flag. She waved back, which was unprofessional and finished him as a problem.

At close the supervisor stood by Interim.

“If I name the plant, it becomes inventory.”

“She’s Interim.”

“That’s a joke.”

“That’s a strategy.”

He watered it, traitorously, from his own bottle.

“Dashboard stays red.”

“City stays fed.”

They did not shake hands. They turned the numbers off together.

Len walked to Black Kettle. Jana’s invented law applied a cup. Coda did not ask about the warning. Coda could see a warning on a person the way Kesh could feel a pipe.

Len put the warning in her coat next to nothing.

Tomorrow the river would come back.

Window 9 would say no, and one yes, and teach a line its name.

The dashboard would not hold that sentence.

The hall would.
