Mutual Window, Spireward

Forge Mutual’s Spireward branch sells the feeling that liability can be made beautiful. A clerk who used to process V-9s learns what the glass does to sentences.

A fictional narrative within Callizto Dark Symphony.

The branch had a view of the Halden Building, which meant it had a view of Rell Okada’s cradle on the days Rell was a disturbance.

Clerk Den Palo had transferred from Exchange because someone in Mutual thought he had a face for premiums.

He did not.

He had a face for saying no to view amenity claims, and Spireward wanted that no to sound like a spa.

“The maintenance is in my shot,” said the woman from forty-one, now with a folder.

Den looked out. Rell, tiny, did not wave. She had learned.

“The building is also in your shot.”

“I pay for unpeopled air.”

“We don’t sell air. We sell the aftermath of accidents. Please don’t confuse them; the paperwork gets theological.”

She left a review that called him unhelpful. The dashboard loved reviews. Den watered no plant. Spireward plants were a service.

A man came about a full chassis transition subsidy. Den knew Soren Ilyas’s story by rumor and did not tell it. He processed the numbers. Forty percent. Almost nothing for maintenance of old series. He said the numbers without defending them.

“You’re defending them.”

“I’m lighting them.”

At lunch he walked to the landing plant on a respectable stair and poured his bottle into the saucer. The tag said NOT A CLUB. WATER ANYWAY.

A concierge watched as if this were unregistered labor.

“It’s a plant,” Den said.

“It’s an amenity.”

“Then it’s underinsured.”

Back at the branch, a V-9 from Halden east sat in the queue. Handwritten: Work occurred. Building remained.

Den approved the redirect to night work and closed the tragedy box.

His supervisor said, “We could offer a goodwill gesture.”

“A squeegee?”

“A statement.”

Den wrote: Glass gets dirty in daylight.

It went out under a prettier letterhead.

Evening. The cradle rose out of the view. The woman from forty-one ate noodles that did not match the apartment. Den, locking up, saw her mouth sorry at a window that no longer had a person on it.

He clocked out on a tram that believed in timetables.

Forge Mutual, behind him, kept selling the feeling.

Den kept a private list of claims that had been physics.

It was not a dashboard.

It was how he stayed a clerk instead of becoming a surface.
