The Meter Pit
When the sea invoices nobody, the pit still floods. A water clerk and a quay worker sweep, argue, and refuse to call it theft.
A fictional narrative within Callizto Dark Symphony.
The pit had a ladder and a personality.
Municipal Water’s woman—her name, at last, was Sila Ren—stood in boots that had met worse and watched the sea do unpaid work.
Joss Pell handed her a broom without courtship.
“I told you I’d sweep.”
“I told you I’d write you.”
“Write the tide.”
They swept. Water went back to water. The meter, unharmed, continued to not understand the ocean.
Bee sat on the rim with the tide table.
“Is this a job?”
“This is a consequence,” Sila said.
Forge Mutual called Sila twice about STATIC GOODS and a crate that had become slightly less static. She let it ring. Insurance was a building. The pit was a hole.
“Unaccounted litre,” Joss said, because he had heard Exchange gossip.
“That’s a fountain sentence. This is salt.”
They got the pit empty enough. Sila wrote: INGRESS: TIDAL. NOT THEFT. NOT BURST. NOT A NAME.
Bee added, in pencil, on the official margin: SEA DOES NOT INVOICE.
Sila looked at it.
“I should erase that.”
She did not.
At the workshop Joss poured machine coffee that had been through several religions. Sila drank it like a form.
“You could take inside work,” she said, then hated herself for sounding like his brother in Exchange.
“You could stop coming to the pit.”
“The pit is my inside work.”
They sat until the next high was a number on paper again.
Bee photographed nothing. She had learned from someone, somewhere, that photographs become ranking.
When Sila left, she left the broom.
“That’s not civic property.”
“It is now,” Joss said.
The sea kept its job.
The crate stayed a crate, higher than pride.
The unaccounted litre, if it existed, did not live in this pit.
It lived in knock-valves and kindly gauges and people who filled bottles without being a case.
Sila, on the tram toward Exchange, did not open the dashboard.
She opened the tide table photo Bee had sent only to her, which was not ranking.
It was a rota the water might, if it ever learned to read, refuse anyway.
