Lease, Two Names

Adding a name to a lease in Meridian is not romance. It is felt on chairs, cumin in a vent, and a clerk who has seen worse love stories.

Format: Flagship story

Archive section: forge-city

District: Meridian Quarters

Location: Housing office and the walk-up kitchen

Reading time: 10 minutes

Tone: Domestic, administrative, food

A fictional narrative within Callizto Dark Symphony.

The housing clerk did not look up.

“Second occupant?”

“Neighbour,” Nia said.

“That’s not a legal category.”

“It is in Meridian.”

Pell Kade stood there with the broom he had forgotten to put down, which made him look like a man applying to be a metaphor.

The clerk had seen Pair//Local printouts, Mutual continuity appendices, and a couple who wanted the extra chair from 5C written into the lease as a dependent.

“You’re 5B and 5C,” she said. “That’s a landing, not a household.”

“We’re trying not to file tickets,” Pell said.

The clerk almost blessed them.

She added Pell as ASSOCIATED OCCUPANT — NOISE MITIGATION. It was the most romantic sentence the database allowed.

Outside, Meridian shoved restaurant air at them. Pair//Local’s window offered a prompt. Nia put her hand over Pell’s terminal.

“If an app names us, I will put cumin in your pillow.”

“That’s terrorism.”

“That’s seasoning.”

They cooked in 5B. Downstairs, 5C was quiet because Pell was not in it. The baby practiced lungs. The vent brought a waiter’s cumin up and their onions down. Somewhere below, Rook’s pot married both.

Nia said, “If this goes badly we can un-associate.”

“That’s a legal category.”

They laughed in the small kitchen.

Later Pell dragged nothing. Nia knocked the pipe twice. The window closed. No ticket.

The extra chair stayed a statement about guests, and Pell sat on it without filing.

On the lease, in the notes field the clerk had not meant them to see, someone had typed:

Landing peace is cheaper than review.

Nia photographed it for no one.

Some documents were already a dinner.
