The Downstairs Neighbour

In Meridian, sound is a kind of rent. A complaint about onions becomes dinner, which is not what the building form was written for.

Format: Flagship story

Archive section: forge-city

District: Meridian Quarters

Location: A fifth-floor walk-up and the kitchen below it

Reading time: 9 minutes

Tone: Domestic comedy, density, food

A fictional narrative within Callizto Dark Symphony.

The form said NOISE AFTER TWENTY-TWO.

It did not say onions.

Nia Voss had onions at nineteen-forty, which was legal and smelled like a manifesto.

Downstairs, Pell Kade tapped the pipe with a broom. The building’s language for please.

Nia tapped back in a minute, which the pipe translated as never.

She opened the window. Meridian Quarters shoved a restaurant up at her: Pair//Local’s evening crowd, laughing as if compatibility were a sport they had refused to play.

Pell appeared in the stairwell with the broom and the dignity of a man who had rehearsed a speech and then met onions.

“It’s cumin,” Nia said.

“It’s my pillow.”

“You’re early for twenty-two.”

“I’m early for patience.”

They looked at each other the way stacked lives do: too close for strangers, too far for family.

“Come up,” Nia said, against her own policy.

Pell came up, against his.

The kitchen was the size of a decent argument. Nia had one chair that was a chair and one that was a statement about guests.

Pell sat on the statement.

She put a plate in front of him because food is how Meridian ends wars it cannot afford to file.

“This is good,” he said, surprised into manners.

“It’s onions. Don’t mythologize.”

A downstairs baby started practicing lungs. The baby was not theirs. In Meridian that did not matter.

“I filed a ticket last month,” Pell said. “About the chair dragging.”

“I know. I got the copy. I put felt on the chair.”

“I noticed. I didn’t say.”

“Say now.”

“Thank you.”

It sat on the table between them like an extra utensil.

Nia’s terminal offered Pair//Local a suggested second meeting based on shared building density. She turned it off. The building was already the algorithm.

They ate.

Pell washed. Nia did not stop him. Some apologies are a sponge.

At twenty-one-fifty the onions were gone and the legal hour had not yet arrived.

“If you cook tomorrow,” Pell said, “knock the pipe twice. I’ll close the window instead of filing.”

“If you drag that chair, I’ll send cumin down the vent.”

“That’s terrorism.”

“That’s seasoning.”

He went downstairs.

Nia put felt on the other chair, the one that was a chair, because fairness is also a kind of felt.

Meridian kept being loud in the legal way.

The form remained on Civic Network, unused, which is the best life a form can hope for.
