The View From 41

Spireward pays for a view. The people who clean the view are not supposed to be in it.

Format: Flagship story

Archive section: forge-city

District: Spireward

Location: Exterior maintenance cradle, east face of the Halden Building

Reading time: 9 minutes

Tone: Workplace drama, class, dry humor

A fictional narrative within Callizto Dark Symphony.

Rell Okada had a job that made people inside the glass uncomfortable, which was impressive for a job that consisted of not falling off a building.

“You’re in the shot,” said the woman on the forty-first floor.

Rell pointed at the cradle.

“The building is also in the shot.”

“I have a client.”

“I have a squeegee.”

The woman closed the privacy layer. It went from clear to smoked in a way that cost more than Rell’s monthly harness inspection.

Her partner, Tov, hung two meters to the left and pretended to check a clip he had already checked.

“You could have waved.”

“I did wave. That’s how she knew I was a person.”

Spireward liked its maintenance to be a rumor. The Halden Building’s residents had paid for a skyline and were prepared to treat labor as a smudge.

Rell’s terminal chimed.

FORGE MUTUAL: EXTERIOR WORK VISIBLE FROM PREMIUM GLAZING MAY AFFECT VIEW AMENITY CLAIMS. PLEASE COMPLETE FORM V-9.

“They want us to apologize to the window,” Tov said.

“The window didn’t complain. The woman did.”

They finished the pane. Water ran down in honest lines. For ten seconds the city was sharper than it had any right to be.

A child on forty-two pressed a palm to the glass.

Rell pressed her glove to the same place.

The child laughed. The parent pulled the child back as if height were contagious.

At break they sat in the cradle with their feet hanging over Glassmere’s distant roofs and ate rice from a box that had been hot two hours ago.

“You ever think about inside work?” Tov asked.

“I think about not falling.”

“That’s not ambition.”

“It’s a hobby I take seriously.”

A message from building management:

Please schedule remaining east-face work after 21:00. Residents report visual disturbance.

Rell typed with her thumbs, which was not recommended in a harness and was therefore how all real work got done.

Windows get dirty in daylight. We can clean them at night. They will still be windows.

Management sent a thumbs-up reaction, which Rell considered an act of violence.

They came back at twenty-one-ten.

Spireward after dark was a different argument. The expensive rooms performed being at home. Someone was playing piano badly with confidence. Someone else was on a call about liability remaining after chassis transition, which Rell had heard so often it had become weather.

On forty-one the smoked glass was clear again.

The woman was not with a client. She was eating noodles from a bowl that did not match the apartment.

She saw Rell.

She did not close the layer.

Rell cleaned the pane.

The woman mouthed sorry.

Rell mouthed it’s a window.

When they docked at the roof, Tov said, “She humanized you. Dangerous.”

“She humanized the glass.”

Rell filed the V-9.

Under visual disturbance she wrote: Work occurred. Building remained.

Forge Mutual would not like the sentence.

The window, at least, was clean.
